New Noise of New York Nightlife
Versatile DJ Journey Finds a Way to Stand Out in City of Originals
Rules to keeping a Manhattan club crowd happy: One, remember to play plenty of Jay Z, MIA and Beyonce. Two, don’t forget to throw in old school beats by artists like Mos Def and Gang Starr. Three, pay tribute to legends like Biggie and Tupac. Finally, end the night with never fail hits by Madonna and groups like the Killers.
Follow this method, take requests, and you might live to see another night behind NY club turntables. Try getting creative with your “own” style and those daredevil ways may leave your crowd confused and you gig-less.
Now picture this; an LA based DJ who likes being creative, original & daring in the swanky New York night scene, dead in the water right? WRONG!
Ask DJ Journey how he copes with the tough New York crowd on a weekend night. His answer is simple & methodical; you break down the music barriers. “When club-goers enter a venue, they already know what they expect to hear and what songs will make people get down, and sing along. It’s engrained in their mind and so they think that’s all they should hear. It doesn’t mean they don’t like to listen or dance to other music, they just aren’t used to it”.
But hold on people, don’t get images in your head of this DJ playing Lil Wayne and then suddenly switching to a Def Leppard track with no transition. It’s not like that. But it is the idea of combining multiple genres of music throughout a four hour set, carefully blending one track into another, and adding additional beats with superb scratching abilities, all while keeping the crowd happy. Might we add, this may even keep the crowd pleasantly surprised.
This is a technique that DJ Journey says is anything but foreign to him, but does admit in the past few months he’s been more loyal to it than ever.
“In Chicago, where I began my career, I played in everything from House Venues to Reggae clubs. It was those in between mainstream places were I really got to work on the craft of being versatile during one set. I’m known to do this kind of stuff in LA too, but NYC is more competitive than ever and now I’m really working on mastering a signature style, a style that stands apart from the rest.
Side by side with his New York City promoter, Otto Ade, the duo is making their presence known everywhere from upscale lounges in midtown to trendy clubs in the Meat Packing District. Both Chicago natives, these “outside of the box” thinkers believe that while although taking chances with music can be risky it’s the only way to go.
“It’s true switching the routine partiers are used to hearing could get messy. But doing what everyone else does never got anybody anywhere. And this is my style, and it seems to be working” And with venues like Hiro, Imperial, Katra and Butter all requesting him back, DJ Journey has no plans on switching up his style.
Catch DJ Journey on New Years Eve 2008 at Butter Lounge. And yes he will be playing all your favorite beats, he’ll just put his own twist on it.

California Declares a State Of Emergency!
"If we were being very optimistic, we would be looking at the middle of the week," L.A. County Capt. Dennis Cross said. "If the weather forecast holds and we continue to get the great work being done in the last 24 hours, we're hoping midweek."
The most extensive losses have been in the Oakridge Mobile Home Park in the Sylmar district of Los Angeles, where winds clocked as high as 70 mph drove a wall of flames across the hillsides and destroyed nearly 500 homes. Authorities combed through the scorched wreckage Sunday in an effort to account for the park's residents, only 134 of whom had been accounted for earlier in the day.
No bodies were found during the search, and police believe most of those living in the 608 mobile homes fled the fire, Deputy Police Chief Michael Moore said. But he urged those who escaped to call in and let investigators know they survived.
"If you are a resident of this park, we want to talk to you," he said. "We want to know you are safe and know where you're at." Watch residents as fire approaches their homes »
Crews were still struggling to contain the blazes Sunday afternoon.
"It is a wind-driven fire, and with those gusty winds up to 25 miles an hour, it's giving the firefighters a really difficult time. It's hopscotched throughout the county," said Lynette Round, a spokeswoman for Orange County Fire Authority, said. iReport.com: 'Insurmountable' wall of flames looms
The largest of three fires, the Freeway Complex fire, had set ablaze nearly 24,000 acres in Orange, Los Angeles and Riverside counties. Most of the damage was in Orange County, in the Los Angeles suburbs of Anaheim and Yorba Linda, where more than 100 homes were destroyed.
As of Sunday evening, fire officials said the blaze was about 19 percent contained.
The Sayre fire, which destroyed the mobile home park, was about 40 percent contained Sunday evening after burning about 10,000 acres. Five firefighters and one civilian suffered minor injuries in the blaze, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported. See images from the Los Angeles County fire »
And in Santa Barbara County, northwest of Los Angeles, firefighters said they had the Tea fire 80 percent contained after it destroyed more than 100 homes. Among the losses in the 1,900-plus acres it incinerated were a monastery and several mansions in a community where celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, have homes.
Investigators have deemed the blaze suspicious, having eliminated "all accidental causes," said Doug Lannon, a spokesman for the state fire agency. iReport.com: Share wildfire photos, video
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared states of emergency for the four affected counties after the fire damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and closed major freeways. The move frees up any state resources needed, and makes the counties eligible for federal assistance grants.

AIDS WALK 2008 IN WEST HOLLYWOOD CA W/ DJ JOURNEY
PARTICPANTS AND SUPPORTERS:
Continue to feel the burn as DJ Journey heats things up at the after-party spinning his signature mash-ups and dance music!
Well known for passion and efforts to build a greener world, DJ Journey is branching out and putting a new spin on how he helps humanity. This Sunday musical philanthropist and self titled “DJ With A Cause” will demonstrate more than just his mixing/scratching skills as he participates in a 6 plus mile walk to help raise money for the AIDS foundation.
The event, which takes place this Sunday, October 19th will include about 30,000 people who will show their support for fighting AIDS by taking to the streets in West Hollywood for AIDS Walk Los Angeles. DJ Journey will be walking with celebrity personality B. Scott, who will lead “Team Love Muffins”. Since the mid 80’s this walk has raised almost $60 million for HIV programs and services throughout Los Angeles County and has made its mark as one of the largest AIDS fundraising events in the US. Last year the walk broke records by raising close to $ 4 million for AIDS Project Los Angeles and various other AIDS service organizations.
But the efforts don’t end at the finish line. After the race B. Scott will host the AIDS walk after party at Eleven Restaurant & Nightclub. Here a silent auction and raffle will be held to benefit the AIDS walk. Participants and friends will enjoy free food and mimosas in the VIP area as well as access to live performances by various artists including Steph Jones, Warrior Nation, and DJ Shy. And of course a party wouldn’t’ be a party without DJ Journey, who will take to the tables at this awesome event.
With his hip-hop, electro mash-ups and on point energy, this DJ is sure to keep the crowd on their feet…..even after a 6 mile walk!

( HIRO’s SATURDAY NIGHT HIRO ) BY LAURA HOEPPNER
HIRO, NEW YORK CITY
What do you get when a club promoter offers his resident DJ a chance to cut out a little early a then takes a shot on an eager newbie in town? The answer - an opportunity for a West Coast turntable-ist with a bi-coastal dream and a dance floor that didn’t die until 4am.
Los Angeles based DJ Journey rocked upscale, dual-level nightclub Hiro Saturday night, making his New York DJ debut a night to remember. Journey pumped out new school chart toppers with old school hits, all while paying careful attention to what kept the crowd swaying to the music. Journey’s unique style and ability to blend varied beats, while mixing multiple genres across the board, registered with the club-goers and kept the promoters who gave him the opportunity nodding their heads in approval. The opportunity is something Journey says he is extremely excited about and grateful for. After all, making the transition from the Hollywood night scene to the ultra-competitive New York City scene hasn’t been as easy as some might think.
For the past four months Chicago native DJ Journey has been packing a light suit case, grabbing stand-by flights, and heading to NY to knock on every DJ management company and booking agent’s door, trying to get a gig in the city that never sleeps and dances until dawn. Handing out mix tapes, bios and resumes-complete with his impressive list of residencies held in the glamorous Los Angeles, including celeb spot Goa and world famous Vanguard, DJ Journey markets himself like a pro.
However; this one-man show without an agent or manager couldn’t seem to catch a break. Managers, promoters and club owners alike all took his CDs and listened to his story, but no one bit. Some said they weren’t taking on new clients, others promised they’d get back to him, but the end result was always the same: no gig in New York.
“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to make the cross-over but I had no idea how hard it could be. I wasn’t sure if it was a thing where promoters and owners wanted to keep west coast DJ’s in the west and east in the east or if they weren’t willing to book me solely based on a CD mixtape. Journey confessed, "All I knew was that I wanted to work in this city know matter what.”
So, Journey continued to make that monthly trip to New York, socialize with the small group of people he knew and educate himself by frequenting whatever club he could get into to watch the DJ’s that were given the opportunity he was hoping to get next. That much desired and awaited opportunity came Saturday night when a promoter that DJ Journey had been contacting and talking to took a chance on him. A jack–of-all-trades, top promoter, creative-club director and business owner who has booked top spinners like Stretch Armstrong and Mark Ronson, Daniel Lara, decided to bank that DJ Journey’s CDs were as good as his live act and let him take to the stage.
At 11:30pm Journey arrived at the 16th Street and 9th Avenue club complete with gymnasts dangling from the 20 foot ceiling and jaw-dropping interior Asian designs. Daniel and his business partner Otto, Ade, a veteran NY promoter with an ear for music talent who’s work with great DJs like Reg West, told Journey he’d hit the tables around 2am. That left Journey with a two hour time slot to impress the promoters, keep the dance floor packed, and show New York that a little west coast love can be a good thing!
One hour and forty-five minutes later girls in stilettos and the guys they brought with them were still glued to the dance-floor with no signs of calling it a night.
“I danced non-stop until the last song ended,” said one clubgoer when asked her impression of the night. “The vibe, the music and his style were amazing – I couldn’t stop dancing!”
The experience left this DJ with an appreciation for the New York night scene and a desire to make himself a permanent part of it. Journey, a veteran DJ for over twelve years, caters to a wide range of music lovers and plays everything from 80’s electro to old school rock. He says if there is any city where he can find people who appreciate it all, it’s New York.
“This is the greatest city in the world, and music culture here is amazing. This is definitely a place where I can continue to be creative musically and grow as a DJ.”
Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for the sounds of DJ Journey, coming to a New York City club near you.
